The draft law to revise court fees for federal courts was approved today by the House of People’s Representatives. This legislation imposes a fee increase of up to 500 percent for court users.

The amendment was deemed necessary as federal court fees had not been updated in 72 years. However, the sharp increase has surprised many, particularly given the current cost of living challenges.

Under the new law, court fees for a case amount of two million birr have risen from 23,000 birr to 82,000 birr. These updated fees are expected to be published in the Negarit newspaper soon.

Critics suggest that such exorbitant fees may create significant barriers for individuals seeking justice.
