The University of Gondar’s own Dr. Shitaye Alemu has been promoted to Professor by unanimous decision. The University’s board has fully appreciated her community service work and has labeled her as an exceptional Scholar and leader. It should be noted that Professor Shitaye was not interested in applying for the promotion but was highly pressured to do so by UoG. The University of Gondar would like to take this opportunity to congratulate her.

Professor Shitaye has indeed been a leading example of national pride and a person of the community. Her work experience ( which is much more than is recorded here) include working as an extraordinary teacher at UoG from 1984 until the present, and from Jan 2001 through the present as Chairperson of the Anti-HIV/ AIDS project of UoG. Some of the memberships she is affiliated with include Ethiopian Medical Association, Ethiopian Public Health Association and the Ethiopian Medicine Association of Ethiopia. Some of the prizes she has been awarded include the Sasakwo Prize for innovative approaches in rural health concerning chronic illness, recognition by the Ethiopian Medical Association and she was awarded by the University for her long service and extraordinary academic service. Professor Shitaye since her last promotion has published 31 publications and has engaged in 6 big community service initiatives. What has been mentioned above is just a few of her accolades and the University of Gondar could not be any more proud of one of its own fine intellectuals.

Recently LANCET which is a major publisher has featured Professor. Shitaye Alemu Balcha of Internal Medicine at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Gondar with great detail. Professor Shitaye is a living legend in the Ethiopian Medical history and she has been characterized as a very selfless professional with a very high level of commitment and work ethic. She has selflessly served the Ethiopian people with great passion and energy for the last four decades.

Once again UoG would like to congratulate Professor. Shitaye Alemu on her Promotion as a Professor!
