On Thursday, March 30th, civil and military leaders of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) who were accused under the charge file of Dr. Debretzion Gebremichael and General Tadese Nadeza were released from prison. Haftom Kesete, the coordinator of the defendants’ lawyers, announced in the evening that they had been released and returned to their homes.

Specifically, three members of the TPLF Executive Committee, Keria Ibrahim, Dr. Abraham Keste, and Dr. Addisalem Balema, were confirmed to have been released from prison. This news was welcomed by supporters of the TPLF, who had been advocating for the release of their leaders.

Keria Ibrahim is a prominent TPLF member and a former speaker of the Ethiopian House of Federation. Dr. Abraham Keste is a former president of Mekelle University and a member of the TPLF Executive Committee. Dr. Addisalem Balema is also a member of the TPLF Executive Committee and was previously the Deputy Director of the Federal Cooperative Agency.

It is important to note that the release of Keria Ibrahim, Dr. Abraham Keste, and Dr. Addisalem Balema from prison came after a peace deal was struck between the federal government and the TPLF. As part of this peace deal, the TPLF was removed from the government’s list of designated terrorist organizations.

The conflict between the TPLF and the Ethiopian government escalated in November 2020 when the Ethiopian government launched a military offensive against the TPLF. Since then, the conflict has displaced hundreds of thousands of people and caused widespread suffering.

The release of these TPLF leaders could be seen as a step towards de-escalation and a potential path to peace in the region. However, the conflict remains complex and multifaceted, and there is still a long way to go before a resolution can be reached.
