Background and Context

The Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority recently announced the suspension of Ethiopian Airlines flights to Eritrea, effective September 30, 2024. The decision was attributed to various grievances, including allegations of “organized and systematic” mistreatment of Eritrean passengers, such as luggage theft, frequent delays, and improper ticketing practices.

Ethiopian Airlines’ Response

Hana Atanafu, Public Relations Officer for Ethiopian Airlines, expressed surprise at the abrupt suspension, noting that two weeks prior, the airline was instructed to increase its flights and use larger aircraft. She highlighted the contradictory nature of the communications, with one directive asking for increased flights from 10 to 15 per week and another suspending them altogether. The situation was further complicated by the public dissemination of the suspension notice on social media, leading to confusion.

Reasons for Suspension

Eritrean authorities cited several reasons for the suspension, including accusations of “improper procedures, unreasonable ticket price hikes, and failure to compensate passengers.” Despite previous warnings, Ethiopian Airlines allegedly did not address these concerns, prompting the suspension.

Ongoing Efforts for Resolution

Ethiopian Airlines is seeking dialogue with Eritrean Civil Aviation authorities to resolve the situation. The airline has refrained from commenting on unofficial communications circulating online and is focusing on formal discussions to clarify the issues and find a resolution.
