Ethiopian Airlines has announced the suspension of its flights to Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, effective immediately. In a statement released today, the airline’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mesfen Tasew, cited operational difficulties on the Eritrean side as the primary reason for the suspension.

One of the significant issues leading to this decision is the complete freeze on the airline’s Asmara branch account. Mr. Mesfen explained that Ethiopian Airlines maintains accounts in both Nakfa, the Eritrean currency, and foreign currencies in Eritrea, with the right to access and move these funds as needed. However, recent actions by the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority have prohibited the airline from moving its money, severely impacting its ability to cover operational expenses.

Due to these financial restrictions, Ethiopian Airlines has been left with no choice but to cancel its flights to Asmara. The inability to move funds has created a situation where the airline cannot maintain its operations in Eritrea, leading to the current suspension.

This decision comes at a time when Ethiopian Airlines is navigating complex international relationships. The airline has been known for its extensive network and resilience in the face of geopolitical challenges. However, the recent tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea have added layers of difficulty to the operational aspects of the airline’s business in the region.

Despite these challenges, Mr. Mesfen expressed the airline’s willingness to resolve these issues through dialogue, emphasizing Ethiopian Airlines’ readiness to address the problems promptly and restore service. This suspension marks a significant disruption in the airline’s operations, with the hope that a resolution can be reached soon.

Ethiopian Airlines is also engaged in various other regional and international projects, including securing and optimizing its digital presence and expanding its services across Africa. The airline’s strategic initiatives are crucial for maintaining its position as a leading carrier on the continent, especially amid such operational hurdles.

The situation in Asmara underscores the complex and often unpredictable nature of operating in regions with intricate political and financial landscapes, which Ethiopian Airlines continues to navigate with caution and strategic planning.
