Ethiopia mourns the passing of one of its greatest musical legends, Merawi Sitota, who has departed from this world’s burdens. A pioneer of Ethiopian modern music, he leaves behind a legacy spanning over five decades—an era in which he stood as a pillar of instrumental and orchestral composition.
Recognized as one of the founding figures of Ethiopia’s modern musical history, Merawi was a multi-talented artist who excelled as a clarinet and alto saxophonist, a composer, and a music director. His influence reached across generations, shaping the golden age of Ethiopian music through both his performances and his leadership in national orchestras.
Born in Ambassel in Wollo, he carried his hometown’s name with pride, making it synonymous with excellence in Ethiopian music. His musical journey began at the young age of 14, when he was deeply inspired by street performances and theatrical bands. Determined to become a musician, he moved to Addis Ababa, where he immersed himself in formal training. He soon joined the Imperial Bodyguard Orchestra and later played a vital role in Ethiopia’s National Theatre Orchestra, serving as both a performer and a mentor for young musicians.
Dubbed “The King of the Clarinet”, Merawi Sitota was a towering figure in Ethiopian music, whose compositions and arrangements enriched the works of legendary Ethiopian vocalists, including Menelik Wossenachew, Melkamu Tebeje, and Fikirte Dessalegn. His instrumental pieces, particularly Tizta, remain timeless and deeply cherished by music lovers.
His global contributions to music were recognized with the prestigious Gold Mercury International Award, a distinction reserved for figures who have made a significant impact on culture and the arts. Throughout his career, Merawi represented Ethiopia on various international platforms, from Africa to Europe and North America, ensuring that Ethiopian music resonated beyond its borders.
Even in his later years, despite health challenges, he continued to inspire. His presence at the National Theatre and his commitment to mentoring young musicians never wavered. He was a beacon of wisdom, humility, and dedication to his craft, embodying the essence of Ethiopian artistic heritage.
