Recognized as one of the founding figures of Ethiopia’s modern musical history, Merawi was a multi-talented artist who excelled as a clarinet and alto saxophonist, a composer, and a music director. Born in Ambassel in Wollo, he carried his hometown’s name with pride, making it synonymous with excellence in Ethiopian music. His musical journey began at the young age of 14, when he was deeply inspired by street performances and theatrical bands. Determined to become a musician, he moved to Addis Ababa, where he immersed himself in formal training. He soon joined the Imperial Bodyguard Orchestra and later played a vital role in Ethiopia’s National Theatre Orchestra, serving as both a performer and a mentor for young musicians.
