Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — Ethiopia’s capital has inaugurated what officials describe as the country’s first purpose-built Children and Youth Theater and Cinema Complex. The opening ceremony, attended by Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh, marked a new addition to the city’s cultural infrastructure.

Modern Facility for Arts and Education

The complex was designed specifically to host both theatrical productions and film screenings for children and young people. Built to contemporary standards, it includes performance halls, rehearsal areas and dedicated spaces for workshops and screenings. City officials say the venue aims to encourage creative expression, provide educational opportunities and create a platform for emerging talent in theater and film.

Government Perspective on Cultural Development

Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abebe said during the event that the project reflects the administration’s approach to public engagement. “Listening to questions and responding appropriately has become the hallmark of our government,” she noted. She added that creating spaces for the arts is considered part of ongoing national reforms and an important step in supporting cultural development.

The mayor highlighted that many existing art venues had fallen into disrepair and were “not suitable for creative work.” She stated that the city has already developed plazas and theaters and remains open to further initiatives to strengthen the arts sector.

Role in the City’s Cultural Landscape

Local observers view the new facility as part of Addis Ababa’s broader efforts to invest in culture and public spaces. The complex is expected to host a range of performances and programs aimed at young audiences and to provide opportunities for artists, performers and educators.

Officials have not disclosed the full schedule of upcoming events, but they expect the venue to become a regular site for children’s theater productions, film screenings and cultural festivals, contributing to the capital’s growing cultural and educational resources.
