Ethiopian Airlines has finalized an order for six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, converting options from a 2023 purchase agreement as part of its long-haul expansion strategy, according to Boeing.

The U.S. planemaker said April 20 the deal will support the carrier’s plans to expand its intercontinental network from Addis Ababa while boosting cargo capacity amid rising demand for long-haul travel and freight.

Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew said the order underscores the airline’s long-term growth ambitions.

“Converting the options of six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner airplanes into a firm order is truly a proud moment for us,” he said. “The order reflects Ethiopian Airlines’ sustainable growth and preparation for further achievements.”

Boeing said the airline already operates Africa’s largest Dreamliner fleet, deploying both 787-8 and 787-9 models on routes linking Addis Ababa with destinations across Europe, Asia and North America, as well as key intra-African markets.

Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing’s vice president of commercial sales and marketing for Africa, said the additional aircraft will underpin the airline’s fleet modernization and network expansion.

“We’re proud that Ethiopian Airlines continues to look to the 787 Dreamliner as the backbone of its fleet,” he said.

The 787’s fuel efficiency and cargo capacity enable airlines to operate long-haul routes more economically while accommodating growing passenger and freight volumes.

Ethiopian Airlines serves more than 145 destinations worldwide and operates a fleet of over 170 aircraft, cementing its position as one of the fastest-growing airline groups globally.
