The Entoto Kechene River Catchment Development Project: Addis Ababa’s New Destination for Nature, Culture, and Tourism

As part of the grand initiatives to make Addis Ababa a more beautiful, green, and livable city for its residents, the Entoto Kechene River Catchment Development and Service Provision Project stands out as a remarkable achievement. This project aims to reconnect the city with nature, ensure sustainable environmental conservation, and create a major tourist attraction. It encompasses a wide array of fascinating and multi-purpose developments.
Below is an in-depth look at the major components and activities included in this transformative project:

1. Environmental Conservation and Green Development

The primary focus of the project is to rehabilitate the environment and restore nature.

  • 597 Hectares of Riverside Development: The project covers a massive 597 hectares, rescuing the river catchments from pollution and waste, and transforming them into beautiful recreational spaces.
  • 15 Hectares of Greenery: A 15-hectare plot of land has been heavily developed and covered with lush green vegetation that harmonizes with the natural surroundings.
  • Flower and Botanical Gardens: Various eye-catching floral and botanical gardens have been cultivated as part of the project. These gardens play a significant role in improving the city’s microclimate while offering a visually stunning experience for visitors.

2. Community Integration, Culture, and Economy

Beyond altering the physical landscape, the development ensures the preservation of local culture and provides economic benefits to the community.

  • Monuments and Heritages Reflecting Local Work Culture: The Kechene and Entoto areas have a deep-rooted history and a distinct working culture, particularly known for traditional pottery and weaving. Monuments and heritage sites that commemorate and pass down this historic work culture to the next generation have been built within the premises.
  • Modern Apiculture: A modern beekeeping farm consisting of 210 modern beehives has been established. Besides the economic benefits of honey production, this helps maintain the ecological balance by pollinating the newly planted flowers and flora.

3. Modern Infrastructure and Active Mobility Options

To facilitate smooth and comfortable movement for both visitors and local residents, various standard road and bridge infrastructures have been constructed.

  • 22 Kilometers of Pedestrian Walkways: Long, scenic walkways have been designed along the riverbanks and through the green spaces for leisurely strolls.
  • 8 Kilometers of Bicycle Paths: A dedicated, safe lane has been built for sports enthusiasts and cyclists.
  • 6.4 Kilometers of Vehicle Roads: A convenient asphalt road has been constructed to allow easy vehicular access in and out of the site.
  • 4 Kilometers of Hiking Trails: For those who love the mountainous terrain of Entoto, dedicated hiking trails have been prepared.
  • Bridges: To streamline the movement of people and vehicles, 2 brand-new vehicle bridges were constructed, while 3 existing vehicle bridges underwent complete renovation.

4. Environmental Protection and Water Management

  • 39 Water Retaining Dams (Check Dams): To prevent flood hazards originating from the mountainous Entoto area, reduce soil erosion, and enrich groundwater levels, 39 check dams have been constructed. This is a crucial engineering intervention to ensure the safety and sustainability of the local ecosystem.
    Summary
The Entoto Kechene River Catchment Development Project is much more than an additional “lung” (oxygen source) for the city. It is a vital sanctuary where citizens can escape the noise of the urban environment, breathe fresh air, engage in physical activities, and reconnect with their social and cultural values. This project serves as a grand showcase of how sustainable urban development can be built in perfect harmony with nature.
