Amhara Bank, recognized as one of the fastest-growing banks in Ethiopia and boasting the highest number of shareholders in the sector, has announced the appointment of Yihnalem as its new Chief Executive Officer.
The appointment comes after a rigorous selection process by the bank’s board of directors, who established strict criteria to identify the ideal candidate to steer the institution’s continued growth trajectory.
“Despite their educational training and experience in the industry, we have left no stone unturned in our search for leadership that matches our ambitious vision.” — Board of Directors, Amhara Bank
The National Bank of Ethiopia formally approved the appointment, clearing the path for Yihnalem to assume executive leadership of the financial institution.
A Career Built from the Ground Up
Yihnalem brings over 25 years of dedicated service in Ethiopia’s banking sector, having built an impressive career at Dashen Bank — one of the country’s largest private banks. Starting from entry-level professional positions, he steadily rose through the ranks to senior management, demonstrating exceptional leadership and strategic acumen at every stage.
His most recent roles at Dashen Bank included serving as Director of Branch Acquisition, Marketing and Strategy Management, where he played a pivotal role in expanding the bank’s footprint and competitive positioning in the Ethiopian market.
Strong Academic Foundation
Yihnalem’s professional expertise is underpinned by a robust academic portfolio from Addis Ababa University, including:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics
- Master’s Degree in Information Systems
- Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA)
This unique combination of quantitative, technical, and managerial education positions him well to navigate the increasingly digital and competitive landscape of modern banking in Ethiopia.
Leadership Transition
Yihnalem succeeds Yohannes Ayalew, who has transitioned to Tsedey Bank as of February. The leadership change marks a new chapter for Amhara Bank as it continues to expand its services and shareholder base across Ethiopia.
Industry analysts view the appointment as a strategic move that combines deep institutional banking knowledge with proven executive experience, potentially positioning Amhara Bank for accelerated growth in Ethiopia’s evolving financial sector.
