Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — The Addis Ababa City Administration has officially inaugurated two massive infrastructure projects that will significantly boost the city’s clean drinking water supply and wastewater management capabilities.
As announced by Mayor Adanech Abiebie, the newly inaugurated facilities include a clean water project capable of producing 60,000 cubic meters per day, alongside the Koye Modern Wastewater Treatment Plant, which can process 20,000 cubic meters of wastewater daily.
Massive Growth in the City’s Water Supply
In a message shared on her social media pages, the Mayor highlighted that numerous water wells have been developed in areas such as Tulu Gudo, Legedadi Phase II, Bereket Condominium, and Bole Arabsa to sustainably address the city’s drinking water shortages.

Saving Rivers with Enhanced Wastewater Treatment
Recalling the severe pollution of Addis Ababa’s rivers from liquid and solid waste over the decades, the Mayor emphasized that expanding the city’s wastewater infrastructure has drastically improved its purification capacity:
“The city’s wastewater treatment capacity, which was a mere 20,000 cubic meters per day in 2009 E.C., has now reached over 253,000 cubic meters daily with the addition of today’s Koye project.”
