In a rare public announcement following a recent military confrontation with neighboring Somalia over a port dispute, the Ethiopian army disclosed its acquisition of a state-of-the-art Su-30 fighter jet and a strategic combat drone. The official handover ceremony took place today, with the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, and Chief Commander of the Ethiopian Air Force, Lt. Gen. Yilma Merdassa, in attendance.

Field Marshal Berhanu emphasized the significance of possessing these top-tier Su-30 fighter jets and strategic combat drones, stating that they are among the world’s best and play a crucial role in defending the country against potential attacks. The recent tensions with Somalia have underscored the need for Ethiopia to bolster its military capabilities.

While the announcement did not specify the military equipment supplier, it highlighted that the Ethiopian Air Force’s acquisition aligns with the army’s broader plan to modernize the oldest air force in Africa. This modernization effort aims to enhance the air force’s combat capabilities in the face of evolving regional challenges, such as the recent confrontation with Somalia over Ethiopia’s attempt to secure a port in return for recognition of Somaliland.

Lt. Gen. Yilma Merdassa added that the Air Force has not only acquired advanced weaponry but has also strengthened its ranks with trained personnel and the latest combat infrastructure, further bolstering its overall capabilities.
