Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The much-anticipated television adaptation of the iconic Ethiopian novel “Fikir Eske Mekabir” (Love to the Grave) is set to air on the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) starting this Ethiopian New Year. The CEO of EBC, Mr. Getnet Tadese, made the exciting announcement that the beloved characters Seblewongel and Bezabih, imprinted in the hearts of Ethiopians for generations, will come to life on screen in this monumental series.
Mr. Getnet shared that the series, which is being produced by Sew Mehon Productions in collaboration with EBC, will begin airing on September 11, 2024, coinciding with the Ethiopian New Year celebrations. The adaptation marks a significant achievement in Ethiopian television, as the beloved novel, written by Haddis Alemayehu, holds a unique place in the nation’s literary history.
The series, titled “Love to the Grave,” will be broadcast on EBC’s ABC News Channel at 2:00 AM, and it will also air on the Entertainment Channel at 5:30 PM. The first episode is scheduled to premiere on EBC’s YouTube channel, @EBCworld, tonight at 00:00 PM, giving viewers an opportunity to watch the series digitally.
The novel has been adapted into four seasons, consisting of a total of 48 episodes, each approximately 45 minutes long. Sew Mehon Productions has agreed to deliver the first 12 episodes within five months, with the remaining episodes to be completed within the next nine months. The production deal was valued at 41,427,600 Birr, with 863,075 Birr allocated per episode.
At the signing ceremony held earlier this year at the new EBC Media Complex, it was emphasized that the adaptation of the novel, known for its rich historical and cultural content, would stay true to the original narrative. Care has been taken to ensure that the drama reflects the essence of Ethiopia’s literary tradition without exaggeration or distraction.
“Fikir Eske Mekabir” is expected to resonate with both older generations who cherish the novel and younger viewers discovering its profound story for the first time. The series will also be re-broadcast on both EBC channels after the evening news to accommodate wider audiences.
For many Ethiopians, this adaptation represents a momentous occasion, fulfilling a long-held desire to see Seblewongel and Bezabih’s love story depicted on screen. Tune in to EBC and enjoy the captivating tale that has defined Ethiopian literature for decades.
Hi,
There is error on this article about the airing time which says “The series,… will be broadcast on EBC’s ABC News Channel at 2:00 AM…”
This should be corrected as 2:00 PM, not AM.
Thanks.
