As part of its landmark 80th-anniversary celebrations, Ethiopian Airlines has announced an aggressive expansion plan that will see over 100 new Boeing and Airbus jets arrive by 2032.
ADDIS ABABA — In a major move that underscores its dominance in African aviation, Ethiopian Airlines has announced a massive fleet expansion strategy, expecting the delivery of more than 100 aircraft from manufacturing giants Boeing and Airbus by 2032.
The blockbuster announcement was made by Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew during the airline’s Global Cultural Day and Static Airshow in Addis Ababa. The event marked a key milestone in a series of global celebrations honoring the carrier’s 80th anniversary.
A Pioneering Legacy and Massive Growth
Speaking to an audience of government officials, diplomats, and international guests, Tasew highlighted the carrier’s legacy of modernization. “For 80 years, Ethiopian Airlines has been a pioneer in introducing aviation technology to African skies,” he stated.
The airline’s current operations are already staggering. Ethiopian Airlines currently transports more than 21 million passengers and over 850,000 tons of cargo annually. The incoming deliveries will drastically scale up its existing footprint, adding to an already robust fleet of 147 operational aircraft.
According to aviation insider publication The Air Current, the airline’s fleet planners are actively evaluating proposals for a diverse mix of aircraft—ranging from nimble, small narrow-body jets to massive wide-body aircraft. This strategic acquisition is part of a broader, ambitious long-term roadmap aimed at completely doubling the airline’s fleet size by 2040 to meet soaring global passenger and cargo demands.
“A Bridge Between Africa and the World”
The high-profile anniversary event, which included tours of the airline’s state-of-the-art maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities, drew high-level praise from state leaders.
Dr. Alemu Sime, Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, lauded the airline’s irreplaceable role in continental development, describing the carrier as “a bridge between Africa and the world.”
“ET plays an irreplaceable role in supporting trade, tourism, industrialization, regional integration, and people-to-people relations,” Dr. Sime said. He reiterated the Ethiopian government’s firm commitment to backing policies that will continuously strengthen the country’s position as Africa’s premier aviation and logistics hub.
80 Years of Connection
As Ethiopian Airlines looks toward a future defined by new destinations, technical innovation, and stronger international partnerships, it shows no signs of slowing down its anniversary festivities.
The airline has been rolling out commemorative events since April 8, including cultural exhibitions and an upcoming 8-kilometer public running event scheduled for later this week. With a massive backlog of aircraft orders secure, the carrier is firmly positioning itself to lead African aviation well into the next decade.
