ADDIS ABABA — Ethiopia’s National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) has announced an indefinite ban on flying any type of drone in Addis Ababa and surrounding areas, effective immediately.
In an official public notice issued regarding the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and similar flying devices, the security agency stated that no drone flight permits will be issued until further notice.
NISS emphasized that it continues to actively monitor and safeguard the airspace of the capital and surrounding areas using integrated anti-drone technologies. The agency warned that any drones launched in violation of this directive—regardless of flight altitude or location—will be detected, intercepted, and forced to land. Operators will be tracked, apprehended, and subjected to legal action.
Previously, individuals or entities requiring drones for work-related purposes were able to apply for permits by submitting details regarding the flight’s objective, location, drone type, and model number. However, NISS stated that the ban has been enacted pursuant to its mandate under Proclamation No. 1276/2021 (2014 E.C.) to ensure the security of national leaders, critical infrastructure, and major national events in collaboration with partner security institutions.
The agency further noted that it has deployed advanced countermeasures and trained specialized personnel to address emerging national security threats posed by the increasing proliferation of drones and related technologies, confirming its readiness to strictly enforce the ban.
