In a letter to the United Nations, Debretsion Gebremichael (Dr.) stated that he had ordered his troops to return to the Tigray region.

TPLF forces had been infiltrating Amhara and Afar regions beyond the Tigray region since June last year.

In November, the government recaptured large swathes of territory, coordinating the army, regional special forces, and militias.

The TPLF leaders, however, described the withdrawal as “strategic.” Lt. Gen. Bacha Debele, a senior member of the Ethiopian Defense Forces, told the BBC that the rebels had been “defeated” and evacuated.

The government announced last weekend that it had taken control of several areas of North Wollo, including the historic town of Lalibela. It is understood that the TPLF chairman wrote a letter when it was announced that the campaign to retake the remaining areas would continue.

Debretsion Gebremichael (Dr.) wrote a letter to the United Nations on Sunday, December 19, 2021, that he has ordered his forces to leave areas outside the Tigray region.

Tigray regional president stated in his letter that the decision would take effect “immediately.” He called for an immediate end to hostilities and for negotiations to begin.

In his letter, Dr. Debretsion also called on the United Nations to establish a Tigray-free zone and to impose arms embargoes on Ethiopia and Eritrea, in addition to civilian flights and aid.

The letter was reportedly written by Dr. Debretsion to UN forces after a large-scale offensive which resulted in recapturing several areas in the last few weeks by government forces.

The government announced that it had liberated North Shoa, South Wollo, and North Wollo in a joint operation with regional forces.

However, in a letter to the United Nations, Dr. Debretsion stated that his forces were “at their full potential” and had not been defeated. Fighting in Tigray, which began in November last year, saw the Ethiopian government withdraw its troops from Tigray in June, and the TPLF set out conditions for a ceasefire and deployed fighters to neighboring regions.

TPLF forces controlled several Amhara and Afar regions and reached North Shoa. Following this, in November, the Ethiopian government forces, in collaboration with the Afar and Amhara Special Forces and militias, pushed back the TPLF forces from the Afar region and most of the Amhara region.

Many countries, individuals, and international organizations have repeatedly called for talks to end the more than a year-long war. The African Union (AU) also sent Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo and US diplomat Jeffrey Feltman for peace talks, but no results have been forthcoming.
