Following an invitation extended by PM Dr. Abiy’s Administration, former federal judge, activist and politician Birtukan Mideksa is to arrive in Addis Ababa next week. Birtukan Mideksa was among the founders and chairwomen of Andinet Party (CUD).

Birtukan first entry to politics began right after her decision as a court judge was violated by security forces, in which they rearrested a former defense minister Seye Abraha despite her granting him bail. She was among the popular figures during the 2005 election that resulted in her arrest along with several prominent opposition figures in the country. After her release, Birtukan Mideksa was rearrested for another two years following her dismissal of the government statement in accepting a plea deal for pardon. Her statement resulted in the revoking of her pardon and was sentenced to life in prision

In 2010 Birtukan Mideksa was released from prison. Right after her release, she headed to the US where she did her Masters in public
administration at Harvard University. Ever since her arrival in the US Birtukan remained inactive in political participation. During his trip to the US PM Dr. Abiy Ahmed met with Birtukan and also hailed her defiance for justice while addressing crowds in DC.

Her return will be historic as the country gets its first woman supreme court president. Birtukan Mideksa’s role in fighting injustice especially in court marks a significant symbolic contribution for a country that is reviving the justice system reputation.
