Ministry of Education announced that it has prepared to change the current educational curriculum completely. And the implementation will take six years.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, a year-long study has been made to identify the pros and cons of the current curriculum. The study discovered that the current program has lots of complications. The problems include children hadn’t been receiving the right education, which fits their level at an early stage. Eshetu Assfaw, the minister’s Curriculum Design, and Implementation Directorate Director, said that the old curriculum is packed with content ignoring the actual skills and potentials.

The current curriculum divides education into two cycles. The first cycle focused mainly on literacy, while the second one focuses on the preparation for university education. The primary school of the first cycle Languages (mother tongue, Amharic), English, Mathematics, Environmental Science, Natural Science, Social science,  and Aesthetic education will be provided. And Secondary school continues subjects are taken in primary school: English and the national language, Mathematics, Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology), Social sciences (Civic education, Geography, and History), and Physical education.

The grade 9 to 10 curriculum is equivalent to grades 11 and 12 in many other countries and it covers more subjects than most other countries require for university.

When it comes to the second,d cycle (grades 11 and 12), it has two streams, namely Social and Natural. Students take freshman courses at the school by pushing the 11 and 12 programs to 9 and 10 grades.

The World Bank had been recommending Ethiopia to change the curriculum which was focusing on ‘few high achievers to education for all.’ The quality of education is also an issue in the curriculum. Secondary education lacks to prepare students for career options within a growing economy of the country.

The Ministry of education plans to participate experts and teachers in every education level to change the curriculum which failed to build well educated citizens
