Millennium Hall, which was redesigned as a temporary Coronavirus treatment center, has run out of beds equipped with oxygen support.

All 130 beds that have oxygen support have admitted patients using them, and the center can no longer accept Covid-19 patients who need help to breathe.

Built by the Ministry of Health in view of the worst-case scenario, the makeshift hospital, located near Bole International Airport, can accommodate 1000 patients. It also has 40 ICU beds and 130 beds with ventilators.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who visited the center, tweeted that the center is part of the country’s preparation “for extreme eventualities.” However, after two months since the hall admitted its first patients, all of the COVID treatment beds at the center are full.

In the early days of the pandemic, the hall used to receive people who hadn’t shown severe symptoms yet had a recovery rate of 74 percent. As the number of confirmed cases spiked in the country, the hall handled more severe cases.

So far, over 15,000 people have been infected with the virus. More than 10,000 of the cases have been confirmed since the beginning of July 2020.

In addition, 239 people have died because of the virus while 66 are in severe condition.
