Former Amhara Regional State Special Forces Commander, Tefera Mamo, appeared in Bahir Dar court today for the first time since his arrest. The Federal Police’s Criminal Investigations Unit told the court that the suspects were charged with terrorism charges.

The Federal Police Criminal Investigations Unit cited the suspect’s alleged involvement in plotting to erode the constitution and asked for 14 days to investigate. The suspect’s lawyers also objected to the police’s request for an interrogation. After hearing arguments from the left and right, the court granted the investigating officer a 10-day remand and rescheduled the hearing.

Gen. Tefera Mamo’s wife said he was abducted on Monday while in Addis Ababa for medical treatment. Since the resignation of Brigadier General Tefera, he has had no agreement with regional authorities. In a recent interview with local media, Gen. Teferam criticized the new regional leadership.
