The Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has started generating electricity from its second turbine.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and various government officials inaugurated the second turbine in Benishangul Gumuz Guba Woreda today.

The installation and testing of a second turbine, Unit 9, which is among the other 13 turbines of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, has also been completed.The second unit, which began operations yesterday, has a capacity of generating 375 MW.

The capacity of the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (ERD) will reach 5,150 MW once the construction and installation of 13 turbines is completed.
