The General Department announced on Friday that 23 suspects have been arrested and are being investigated in accordance with Emergency Proclamation No. 6/2015.

The announcement was made by Minister of Government Communication Service Leges Tulu (Dr.) during a statement on the current situation in the Amhara region.

Dr. Tulu said that the arrests were made in the first phase of the emergency plan, which was launched to restore peace and stability to the region. He said that the security forces have been successful in hitting the groups gathered in Bahrdar, Debremarkos, Debreberhan, Lalibala, Gondar and Shewarobit, and that the areas have been brought back to a peaceful state.

Dr. Tulu also said that the forces in and around these six cities were not using the opportunity to hand over weapons and surrender to the security forces. He urged them to do so immediately, or they will face the consequences.

The minister also explained that the activities of institutions in the areas of the Amhara region where security problems have occurred are now being restored. He said that the government is committed to providing security and stability to all Ethiopians.

The arrests of the 23 suspects are a significant development in the government’s efforts to restore peace and stability to the Amhara region. It remains to be seen whether these arrests will be successful in deterring further violence, but they are a step in the right direction.
