Former Amhara regional president Gedu Andargachew has called for the establishment of a “temporary administration” that includes “all forces” in the region. He stressed that there should be a political dialogue to “resolve the problem honestly” in the Amhara region.
Gedu, who is one of the officials who led the “change” that brought Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to power, made the call as the House of Representatives is considering whether to approve a state of emergency in the Amhara region. Gedu, who is now a member of parliament for the ruling Prosperity Party, said he wanted to “contribute” to solving the problem in the Amhara region by “sincerely” presenting his opinion.
Gedu, who led the Amhara region for five years, said the solution to the region’s current problems is “political dialogue.” “If this problem is to be solved sincerely, the solution is not the use of military force, which has led to the worst destruction of the Amhara region and other parts of Ethiopia,” he said. “I believe it is a political discussion.”
While presenting his suggestions to resolve the conflict in the Amhara region, Gedu Andargachew was interrupted several times by other MPs. Some MPs questioned his motives, while others argued that his proposals were not feasible. Gedu defended his proposals, saying that they were the only way to achieve a lasting peace in the Amhara region.
