Athlete Haile Gebrselassie Urges Ethiopian Olympic Committee President to Step Down, Highlights Country’s Declining Performance at the Olympics

Renowned athlete Haile Gebrselassie has publicly called on Dr. Ashebir Woldegiorgis, President of the Ethiopian Olympic Committee, to step down from his position, citing Ethiopia’s disappointing performance at the recent Olympic Games. Haile, widely respected for his achievements in long-distance running, made his remarks during an interview, where he emphasized that the leadership must take responsibility for the country’s declining athletic success on the global stage.

“We cannot hold our heads high after finishing forty-seventh in the world at the Olympics,” Haile stated, expressing his dismay at Ethiopia’s performance. Ethiopia, once a powerhouse in long-distance running, secured only a modest number of medals in the most recent Olympics, a far cry from its historical achievements.

Ethiopia managed to bring home only five medals: one gold and four silver. In contrast, neighboring Kenya, another East African nation known for its dominance in long-distance running, secured a total of eleven medals: four gold, two silver, and five bronze. Kenya’s impressive haul placed them significantly ahead of Ethiopia in the overall standings, adding to the disappointment felt by Ethiopian sports enthusiasts and athletes alike.

Haile Gebrselassie, who has been a vocal advocate for improving Ethiopia’s sports infrastructure and athlete support, did not hold back in his criticism. He praised athletes Sisay Lemma and Tamirat Tola for their outstanding performances, which brought honor to Ethiopia. “He brought gold,” Haile said of Sisay Lemma, expressing his deep admiration for the athlete’s dedication and success.

However, Haile also stressed that individual achievements alone are not enough. He urged other athletes and sports officials to take a page from Sisay Lemma’s book and prioritize the country’s reputation and honor. “We must learn from Sisay Lemma and put the country first,” he stated, calling for a renewed focus on national pride and collective effort.

The veteran athlete’s remarks come at a time when the Ethiopian sports community is grappling with questions about the future of the country’s Olympic ambitions. The lackluster performance at the recent Olympics has led to widespread calls for reform within the Ethiopian Olympic Committee and the broader sports administration.

Dr. Ashebir Woldegiorgis, who has served as the President of the Ethiopian Olympic Committee for several years, has faced increasing scrutiny over his leadership. In his statement, Haile Gebrselassie directly addressed Dr. Ashebir, saying, “If you have respect for the people of Ethiopia, then hand over your responsibilities.” The call for Dr. Ashebir to step down has resonated with many who believe that a change in leadership is necessary to revitalize Ethiopia’s sports programs and restore the country’s standing in international competitions.

As Ethiopia reflects on its Olympic performance, the hope is that the nation’s sports leaders will take the necessary steps to ensure that the country’s athletes are better supported and prepared for future competitions. The call for accountability and change, led by figures like Haile Gebrselassie, marks a pivotal moment for Ethiopian athletics.
