Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Announces Key Cabinet Appointments

The Prime Minister’s Office has announced significant changes in Ethiopia’s cabinet, appointing Dr. Gedion Timotheos as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hanna Arayaselassie as the Minister of Justice, and Selamawit Kassa as the Minister of Tourism.

Dr. Gedion Timotheos: Minister of Foreign Affairs

Dr. Gedion Timotheos has been named the Minister of Foreign Affairs, taking over from Taye Atsekeselassie, who was appointed as President. Dr. Gedion has served as Ethiopia’s Attorney General since November 2, 2021, and previously held the role of Minister of Justice. Before that, he was also the Ethiopian Attorney General prior to the position’s rebranding. With his legal background and experience in governance, Dr. Gedion now steps into the foreign affairs role at a time when Ethiopia is managing complex diplomatic engagements both regionally and globally.

Hanna Arayaselassie: Minister of Justice

Hanna Arayaselassie has been appointed as the Minister of Justice, a position she assumes following her tenure as the head of the Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC). During her time at EIC, she focused on driving investments into Ethiopia, leveraging her experience from previous roles as a senior policy researcher at the Prime Minister’s Office, Deputy Commissioner of the EIC, and a lecturer at Addis Ababa University School of Law. Hanna also led Ethiopost from 2020, where she implemented significant reforms and improvements in service delivery, culminating in the institution receiving the Postal Excellence Award for the Africa Region in 2023.

Selamawit Kassa: Minister of Tourism

Selamawit Kassa has been appointed as the new Minister of Tourism. Before this role, she served as the State Minister for the Government Communication Service, where she played a key part in the government’s communication strategies. Her new role in tourism comes at a critical time for Ethiopia’s tourism sector, as it seeks to enhance its appeal both regionally and internationally.

These appointments mark a reshuffling of Ethiopia’s leadership, with a focus on foreign relations, justice, and tourism, as the country continues to address ongoing challenges and opportunities in these areas.

  1. These ministers were the evils of the country who don’t care for citizens. It was under their leadership that all gross human rights violations committed throughout our Country. Arbitrary leadership (extrajudicial killings, arrests, eviction, planned starvation of large number of people, forced disappearances, lying Ethiopians and international community, demolishing citizens property and dislocation, violating constitutional rights of citizens on their property (art .40 of FDRE constitution)….many more)
    What new things they bring?
    The lorry has finished fuel.

  2. These appointments of two women to ministerial positions are encouraging news for me. 2 women and 1 man? It gives me hope that sooner if not later our women will be able to wrestle away the mantle of ruling that country peacefully from the men who have been the sole leaders of the country for millennia.

    Dear my countrywomen,

We the men have been ruling that country for centuries. We had monopolized the top mantle one after another that we have grown to be so arrogant about it. We start bloody and destructive wars for stupid reasons where we have sent millions of your children to awaiting inferno and you are still wailing for them. We men have stopped listening to reasons. We have to be denied of that monopoly of power by you peacefully and tell us men to stand way back in line for the next 100 years. Just look at what we started in both Amhara and Oromia regions. We are sending thousands of your sons and daughters to their inevitable deaths in those two regions for utterly stupid reasons. That was started just at the heels of the end of the bloody mayhem we men waged in the northern part of the country where close to a million young men and women lost Allah blessed lives. Who knows where we will light up the next bloodshed.

Such evil and destructive cycle of destructive mayhem will go on as long as we the men are running the affairs of that country, the country that is cited as good doer in the Holy Scriptures of the two major religions of the world. It has to be saved and that chance is in your blessed hands.
