Meta Platforms to Launch Flagship Program in Partnership with Ethio Telecom
Addis Ababa, October 14, 2024 – Ethio telecom has announced a significant partnership with Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook), marking a major milestone in Ethiopia’s digital service sector. During a strategic meeting between Frehiwot Tamru, CEO of Ethio telecom, and Vikas Menon, Director of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships for the Middle East and Africa at Meta, both companies discussed a collaborative initiative aimed at enhancing digital services for customers.
As part of this partnership, Meta is set to launch its flagship program in Ethiopia in collaboration with Ethio telecom. This initiative will provide Ethiopian customers with free access to Meta-Facebook services for a limited period, even without sufficient mobile balance. The goal is to increase data usage and improve connectivity across the country. Additionally, important content related to health, education, and job opportunities will be accessible at no cost, further empowering users with vital information.
Frehiwot Tamru highlighted the importance of digital inclusion in Ethiopia and underscored Ethio telecom’s commitment to improving the local digital ecosystem. Key areas of focus in the collaboration include increasing digital literacy, supporting content creation, promoting cultural preservation, and enhancing cybersecurity measures to protect customer data.
“This partnership is a critical step towards enhancing the digital experience for our customers. By working with Meta, we are fostering greater accessibility and inclusivity in Ethiopia’s digital landscape,” Tamru said.
Once the initiative is fully implemented, it is expected to significantly contribute to digital inclusion efforts, improve customer experiences, and boost Ethiopia’s digital economy. This collaboration between Ethio telecom and Meta is set to position Ethiopia as a growing player in the global digital marketplace.
