Renowned Ethiopian singer Ejigayehu Shibabaw, professionally known as Gigi, is among the diverse group of vocalists featured on the recently released Gladiator 2 soundtrack. Composed by Harry Gregson-Williams, the music continues the epic legacy of the original Gladiator score by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard, blending historical authenticity with a modern global sound.
Gigi, celebrated for her groundbreaking fusion of traditional Ethiopian music with contemporary styles, brings a unique dimension to the soundtrack. Her career has been marked by notable projects, such as her 2001 self-titled album Gigi, produced by Bill Laswell, which showcased her collaborations with jazz legends Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Over the years, she has released critically acclaimed works including Illuminated Audio (2003), Gold & Wax (2006), and Mesgana Ethiopia (2010), further cementing her status as a global ambassador for Ethiopian music.
For Gladiator 2, Gregson-Williams incorporated a wide range of historical and contemporary instruments, alongside a roster of world-class artists. The soundtrack features performances from Lisa Gerrard, British soprano Grace Davidson, Israeli singer Lior Attar, flamenco artist Antonio Lizana, and Nigerian vocalist Ayo Adeyemi. Instrumentalists include Abraham Cupeiro on the ancient Carnyx and Iberian Horn, Richard Harvey on ney and ancient flutes, Hugh Marsh on electric violin, Martin Tillman on electric cello, Hamid Saeidi on Kantele and Santur, and Loga Ramin Torkian on GuitarViol.
