Kuku Sebsibe to Release Eighth Album ‘Dejazmach’: A Celebration of Ethiopian Music

Celebrated Ethiopian singer Kuku Sebsibe, known for her distinctive blend of traditional Ethiopian melodies and modern influences, is poised to release her eighth album, “Dejazmach,” on April 24, 2017. With a career deeply rooted in music from a young age, Kuku’s journey is a testament to her passion and commitment to Ethiopian musical heritage.

Born in Addis Ababa, Kuku’s musical odyssey began early, influenced by her father’s musical background and early exposure to diverse genres. Her talent blossomed during her schooling at Nazareth School and the American Mission, where she charmed classmates with her renditions of popular songs using everyday items as instruments.

Kuku’s professional career ignited when she impressed fellow musicians with her vocal prowess, leading to collaborations with legendary bands like Ibex and Wallias. She made history as the first female singer to perform regularly at the prestigious Hilton Hotel with Wallias band, marking the start of her illustrious journey.

Internationally acclaimed, Kuku has performed across continents, from Djibouti to Abu Dhabi, captivating audiences with her soulful performances. Her move to the United States in the late 1980s saw her further expand her reach, performing in major cities and embarking on successful European tours.

Returning to Ethiopia in 2002, Kuku continued to enchant fans with albums like “Gize Setegne” and the cherished “Tizita,” showcasing her ability to blend modern grooves with traditional Ethiopian ballads. Her latest release, “Chalkubet,” arranged by Abiy Arka, exemplifies her evolution as an artist, melding contemporary sounds with Ethiopian musical flavors.

“Dejazmach,” her upcoming album, promises to be a culmination of Kuku Sebsibe’s musical journey, featuring collaborations with luminaries like Teddy Afro and Abel Paulos. With arrangements by Maru Alemayehu and performances by acclaimed musicians like Aklilu W/Yuhans and Zerihun Beliko, the album is set to mesmerize audiences worldwide.
