M-PESA Ethiopia Integrates with EthSwitch to Boost Financial Inclusion
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – M-PESA Ethiopia has announced the completion of its integration with EthSwitch, Ethiopia’s national payment network, marking a major step toward expanding financial inclusion across the country.
The integration enables full interoperability across 15 banks and mobile wallets, with additional institutions expected to join in the coming weeks. This means M-PESA customers can now send money directly from their wallets to any bank account linked to EthSwitch or make payments to merchants using bank-issued EthQR codes. Conversely, bank customers without M-PESA accounts can transfer funds to M-PESA wallets or pay M-PESA merchants by scanning M-PESA EthQR codes via their mobile banking apps.
“This milestone brings us closer to a connected, inclusive financial ecosystem, where everyone, everywhere in Ethiopia can transact seamlessly, securely, and conveniently,” M-PESA Ethiopia stated.
The service leverages EthSwitch’s secure national infrastructure, ensuring real-time transactions and compliance with national financial standards. Customers can access the feature through the M-PESA app, while clients of major banks—including Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, CBE Birr Addis International Bank, Amhara Bank, Awash Bank, Bunna Bank, Cooperative Bank of Oromia, Enat Bank, Lion International Bank S.C., KAAFI Microfinance, Siinqee Bank S.C., Siket Bank, Tsehay Bank, Wegagen Bank, and Zemen Bank S.C.—will now find M-PESA listed among transfer options in their mobile banking applications.
This integration is seen as a significant move toward strengthening Ethiopia’s digital financial infrastructure and promoting inclusive access to financial services for individuals and businesses nationwide.
