Emirates to Introduce Airbus A350-900 on Addis Ababa Route from January 2027
Addis Ababa, Feb 23, 2026 — Dubai-based carrier Emirates is preparing a major upgrade to its service to Ethiopia, with plans to deploy its next-generation Airbus A350-900 aircraft on the Dubai–Addis Ababa route beginning January 1, 2027, according to recent airline scheduling updates.
If implemented, the move would replace the Boeing 777-200LR currently serving the route with a more modern wide-body jet configured in three classes, including Emirates’ increasingly prominent Premium Economy cabin — a product the airline has been rolling out across key global destinations.
A Shift Toward New-Generation Aircraft
The A350-900 is widely regarded as one of the most efficient long-haul aircraft currently in operation. For passengers traveling between Addis Ababa and Dubai — one of Ethiopia’s busiest international corridors — the upgrade could translate into:
- Quieter cabins and smoother flights
- Improved air quality and cabin humidity
- Higher cabin pressure designed to reduce fatigue
- Updated inflight entertainment and seating products
- Introduction of Premium Economy on the route
With seating expected to be just under 300 passengers, the aircraft balances capacity with comfort, positioning the service for both business and transit travelers connecting through Emirates’ global hub.
Part of a Broader Fleet Modernization
Addis Ababa is one of several destinations slated to receive the A350 as part of Emirates’ ongoing fleet renewal strategy. Other cities expected to see the aircraft include major markets across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
The airline has been accelerating its transition toward newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft following substantial investments in wide-body jets. The A350 consumes significantly less fuel than older aircraft models, lowering operating costs and carbon emissions — a key consideration as airlines face rising environmental and regulatory pressures.
Strategic Importance of the Addis Route
Emirates has long maintained a strong presence in Ethiopia, competing with both Ethiopian Airlines’ extensive global network and other Gulf carriers for transit passengers traveling between Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America.
The Addis Ababa route serves:
- Ethiopian diaspora traveling through Dubai
- Business travelers and investors
- Tourists and conference participants
- Transit passengers connecting worldwide
Introducing a flagship aircraft signals the airline’s continued confidence in demand for travel to and from Ethiopia.
Interim Upgrades Before 2027
The planned A350 deployment follows earlier improvements to the route. Emirates recently announced that upgraded Boeing 777 aircraft featuring Premium Economy would begin serving Addis Ababa starting March 2026, offering passengers a preview of the airline’s new cabin strategy.
Not Yet Officially Confirmed
While the aircraft assignment appears in scheduling systems, Emirates has not formally announced the change. Airline deployments often remain provisional until closer to launch, meaning the plan could still be adjusted based on operational needs, aircraft deliveries, or market conditions.
