Ethiopian Airlines Suspends Select Middle East Flights as Security Risks Escalate

By Addis Insight February 28, 2026

Addis Ababa — Ethiopian Airlines has cancelled several passenger flights to key Middle Eastern destinations, citing a deteriorating security environment across the region, as airlines worldwide reassess operations over conflict-adjacent airspace.

Africa’s largest carrier said services to Amman, Tel Aviv, Dammam, and Beirut have been suspended, underscoring the widening impact of geopolitical instability on commercial aviation corridors linking Africa to the Middle East.

“Due to the current security situation in the Middle East, Ethiopian Airlines is cancelling some of its flights to/from the region,” the airline said in a statement. It added that it is “actively monitoring developments” and will take further measures as necessary to safeguard passengers and crew.

Critical Corridor Disrupted

The affected routes form part of Ethiopian Airlines’ dense network connecting East Africa with Gulf labor markets, Levantine trade hubs, and Israel — one of the busiest non-African destinations served from Addis Ababa.

The Middle East functions as a major transit zone for Ethiopian Airlines’ long-haul operations, as well as a key origin-destination market driven by migrant workers, religious travel, diplomatic missions, and cargo flows.

Suspensions on these routes could temporarily reduce passenger throughput at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, one of Africa’s fastest-growing hubs, while also disrupting time-sensitive freight movements.

Safety-Driven Operational Adjustments

Airlines typically reroute or cancel flights when security risks include potential airspace restrictions, military activity, or uncertainty around airport operations. While Ethiopian Airlines did not disclose specific threat assessments, the move aligns with precautionary actions taken by global carriers during periods of regional volatility.

The company did not indicate when services might resume, signaling that decisions will depend on evolving security conditions.

Passenger Advisory

The airline urged travelers to verify flight status before departing for the airport and to coordinate changes through official channels.

Passengers traveling to or from the affected destinations are advised to:

  • Check updates on Ethiopian Airlines’ digital platforms
  • Contact travel agencies for rebooking or refunds
  • Reach the airline’s Global Customer Interaction Centre at reservation@ethiopianairlines.com

Further schedule adjustments remain possible if the situation deteriorates or spreads to additional airspace.

Strategic Position

As a member of Star Alliance and Africa’s largest airline by fleet and destinations, Ethiopian Airlines plays a central role in maintaining intercontinental connectivity for the continent. Temporary suspensions on Middle Eastern routes highlight the vulnerability of global aviation networks to regional conflicts far beyond national borders.

The carrier said it will continue monitoring developments closely and prioritize operational safety while minimizing inconvenience to passengers.
