Ethiopian Airlines Suspends Multiple Middle East Flights as Regional Airspace Closures Disrupt Travel

By Addis Insight March 2, 2026

Ethiopian Airlines has suspended flights to and from several major Middle Eastern destinations after widespread airspace closures across the region, underscoring the growing impact of geopolitical tensions on global aviation networks.

Africa’s largest carrier said services to Amman, Beirut, Bahrain, Tel Aviv, Doha, Kuwait, Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Dammam will remain canceled until further notice. The airline did not specify a timeline for resumption, stating that operations will depend on evolving security conditions and regulatory guidance.

The sweeping suspensions affect key commercial hubs that serve as critical transit points for passengers traveling between Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. Ethiopian Airlines operates one of the continent’s most extensive long-haul networks, and the Middle East functions as both a destination market and a strategic corridor for connecting traffic.

The airline said it is monitoring developments closely and will adjust operations as safety conditions permit.

Passenger Options

Travelers affected by the cancellations are being offered several alternatives, including:

  • Rebooking for a later date once flights resume
  • Rerouting via nearby destinations where feasible
  • Full refunds for unused tickets

Passengers who purchased tickets directly from the airline can modify their bookings through Ethiopian Airlines’ Global Customer Interaction Center via email or official channels. Those who booked through travel agencies are advised to contact their agents.

The carrier also urged customers to verify flight status before traveling to the airport using its online tracking tools.

Regional Aviation Disruption

Airspace closures typically ripple across international aviation, forcing airlines to cancel flights, reroute aircraft over longer paths, or suspend services entirely. Such disruptions can significantly increase operating costs, extend flight times and reduce network efficiency.

For Ethiopian Airlines, the Middle East represents not only a major passenger market but also a region with strong business, labor and diaspora ties to East Africa. The suspension may therefore affect migrant workers, business travelers and cargo flows, including time-sensitive shipments.

Despite the operational challenges, the airline emphasized that safety remains its top priority.

“We continue to closely monitor the situation and will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and convenience of our passengers and crew,” the company said in a statement, apologizing for the disruption.

Ethiopian Airlines, a member of the Star Alliance network, operates from its hub at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport and serves more than 130 international destinations, making it a key player in connecting Africa to the world.
