MIDROC Investment Group has begun demolition and redevelopment work on Millennium Hall, one of Ethiopia’s most prominent venues for major national and international events over the past 18 years.

The project involves a major restoration and expansion of the facility as part of Ethiopia’s preparations for the 32nd Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP32).

Designed by Zeias Architecture, the redevelopment will include a large underground parking facility, upgraded technology, and improved pedestrian flow. The project is intended to modernize the venue, expand its capacity, and attract more visitors.

MIDROC Investment Group CEO Jamal Ahmed previously said the group plans to make 1,500 hotel rooms available in Addis Ababa for participants attending COP32. As part of that effort, MIDROC is developing five modern hotels in the capital.

These include Moxy by Marriott, located within the Millennium Hall compound; Four Points by Sheraton, located in the Mohammed Residential Village; and another modern hotel within the Sheraton Addis compound.

In addition, Wabishebele Hotel, which recently joined the MIDROC family, is preparing for the conference under the Autograph Collection by Marriott brand. Work is also nearing completion at Westin Addis, which is located within the African Union compound.

Beyond Addis Ababa, the group is also expanding its hotel investments in other cities. Four Points by Sheraton hotels are under construction in Jimma and Hawassa, while both Four Points by Sheraton and Protea by Marriott hotels are being developed in Bahir Dar.

MIDROC is also working on the acquisition and upgrade of the nearby Langano Savannah Resort, with plans to raise it to international Marriott standards.

Millennium Hall was inaugurated in 2000 during Ethiopia’s Millennium celebrations. The massive venue covers 20,000 square meters and can accommodate up to 25,000 people at a time.

Demolition and preparatory works reportedly began at the end of February. Details regarding the total investment and possible job impacts are expected to be announced soon.

Once completed, the renovated Millennium Hall is expected to preserve the site’s historic significance while supporting modern urban development and strengthening Ethiopia’s capacity to host major international diplomatic and global events.
