In a country where 85% of the population is engaged in agriculture, the image of the Ethiopian farmer has long been one of hardship and traditional toil. However, Eskinder Yoseph, a tech-savvy entrepreneur from the heart of Addis Ababa, is rewriting that narrative. In a recent high-profile interview on Seifu on EBS, Eskinder showcased how he transformed a childhood dream in Piazza into a 300-million-ETB modern dairy empire in Hawassa.

His story is not just about farming; it is a blueprint for how technology, passion, and a “generational mindset” can revolutionize Ethiopia’s most vital economic sector.

From Piazza to the Pastures: A Childhood Ambition

Growing up in the bustling, historic neighborhood of Piazza, Eskinder was surrounded by goldsmiths and urban commerce. Yet, while his peers dreamed of conventional city careers, Eskinder told everyone he wanted to be a farmer.

“In our neighborhood, farming was used as a joke—a symbol of being ‘unaware’ or ‘behind,'” Eskinder recalled. “But I had a special love for animals.”

Supported by his mother, who encouraged his passion despite the social stigma, Eskinder maintained his drive. He eventually spent nine years working at the Gilgel Gibe III hydroelectric project, where he saved the capital necessary to launch his true calling.

The Digital Shepherd: “My Cattle” and Precision Farming

Today, Eskinder manages a sprawling operation near Bishan Guracha (Hawassa). His approach stands in stark contrast to traditional methods through the integration of high-end technology. At the heart of his operation is the “My Cattle Manager” app, a mobile platform that serves as the farm’s “brain.”

By moving away from paper logs, Eskinder achieves a level of precision rarely seen in regional agriculture:

  • Data-Driven Genealogy: Each of the 300+ cows has a digital “National ID.” The app tracks “blood levels,” family trees, and vaccination schedules. Eskinder noted that a heifer with a verified digital history can be worth up to 500,000 ETB.
  • Biological Analytics: The app tracks heart rates, temperatures, and breeding cycles. This allows the team to assist within the critical 13-minute window during birth and ensures cows calve annually to maximize milk production.
  • Mechanized Efficiency: Data from the app is paired with a “Double-Seven” parallel milking parlor that milks 14 cows simultaneously in just seven minutes—a far cry from traditional manual methods.

Regenerative Agriculture & Sustainability

Eskinder is also a staunch advocate for Regenerative Farming. Rather than relying on synthetic fertilizers that deplete soil health, his farm operates on a closed-loop system. Cattle waste is processed into organic fertilizer used to grow 500 hectares of maize and fodder. This circular approach ensures the soil is rehabilitated while producing the 30+ varieties of feed his herd consumes daily.

Redefining the “Farmer” Identity

One of the most striking parts of Eskinder’s interview was his effort to professionalize the image of the farmer. He appeared on set in high-end “working clothes,” arguing that a modern farmer must be a “generalist”—part mechanic, part accountant, part data scientist, and part veterinarian.

He spoke candidly about the “urban phobia” he developed after moving to the countryside. For Eskinder, the silence of rural life offers a mental clarity that the chaos of Addis Ababa cannot match.

“The city makes me anxious now,” he admitted. “The farm gives you a space to be an influencer rather than someone influenced by others’ expectations.”

A Love Story in the Barn

The farm is also the site of Eskinder’s personal life. He met his wife when she traveled from the Bethel neighborhood of Addis Ababa to his farm for agricultural training. In a story that charmed the audience, he proposed to her while they were both treating a sick cow—putting a ring on her finger while she held an IV bag. Today, they raise their two children on the farm, where the kids drink fresh milk directly from the source and ride tractors with their father.

The Future: Scaling Ethiopia’s Potential

Eskinder’s vision extends beyond his own fences. He currently:

  • Employs 18 permanent staff and up to 30 seasonal workers.
  • Is moving into retail processing with his own brand of butter and cheese.
  • Provides training to over 1,000 other breeders through his social media platforms.

His message to the youth and the government is clear: Ethiopia leads Africa in livestock numbers but lags in productivity. By treating agriculture as a high-stakes, data-backed business rather than a subsistence struggle, Ethiopia can become a global powerhouse.

“Agriculture is a lifestyle, not just a business,” Eskinder concluded. By blending the “Arada” hustle with rural resourcefulness, he has proven that the most modern thing an Ethiopian can do today is return to the land.
