Ethiopia has taken another major step in its ambitious push to transform the Lake Tana corridor into a premier tourism destination, with the inauguration of the Felege Gion Eco Resort by Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh.

Located in the historic city of Bahir Dar, the new resort is designed to position the region as a high-end yet environmentally conscious tourism hub, combining modern hospitality infrastructure with the natural and cultural richness of Lake Tana.

A 4.5 Billion Birr Bet on Tourism

The Felege Gion Eco Resort represents a significant financial commitment, with total investment estimated at 4.5 billion birr. Completed over a construction period that stretched roughly two and a half years, the project reflects Ethiopia’s growing emphasis on tourism as a driver of economic diversification.

At a time when the country is seeking new foreign exchange sources beyond traditional exports, large-scale tourism developments like this are increasingly viewed as strategic assets.

Inside the Resort: Modern Design Meets Recreation

The resort blends modern elegance with multi-functional leisure spaces, offering a wide range of facilities designed to attract both domestic and international visitors:

  • Contemporary hospitality spaces with upscale accommodation and design
  • Recreational areas tailored for relaxation and entertainment
  • Retail and market zones to support local commerce and crafts
  • An amphitheater for cultural events and performances
  • Supporting infrastructure aimed at enhancing visitor experience

One of the standout features is its waterfront development, including a modern port capable of accommodating up to 12 boats. The resort also operates five modern boats, each with a capacity of 30 passengers, positioning it as a key player in lake-based tourism experiences.

Competing in a Growing Luxury Segment

The Felege Gion Eco Resort enters an emerging but increasingly competitive hospitality landscape around Lake Tana. It will be managed by Roda Hospitality Group, which is also involved in operating the nearby Gorgora Eco Resort.

This alignment signals a coordinated approach to building a premium tourism ecosystem, rather than isolated projects. The goal is to create a cluster of high-quality destinations capable of attracting international travelers while raising service standards across the region.

A Broader Vision for Lake Tana

The launch of Felege Gion Eco Resort is part of a wider national strategy championed by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who has prioritized tourism under Ethiopia’s economic reform agenda.

Plans are underway to further develop the Lake Tana tourism corridor in coordination with Gorgora and other sites, transforming the area into a flagship destination comparable to leading eco-tourism zones globally.

This vision emphasizes:

  • Integrated tourism zones rather than standalone resorts
  • Public-private partnerships in hospitality management
  • Infrastructure-led growth, including transport and waterfront access
  • Sustainable and eco-friendly development models

Opportunities—and Questions

While the scale and ambition of the Felege Gion Eco Resort are undeniable, its long-term success will depend on several factors:

  • Accessibility: Improved transport links to Bahir Dar remain critical
  • Service quality: Delivering consistent, world-class hospitality
  • Market positioning: Attracting both domestic high-income travelers and international tourists
  • Economic spillovers: Ensuring local communities benefit through jobs and commerce

The project also raises broader questions about return on investment and whether large capital outlays—often described colloquially as the “scent of birr spending”—will translate into sustainable revenue streams.

The Bottom Line

The inauguration of Felege Gion Eco Resort marks more than the opening of a new hospitality venue—it signals Ethiopia’s intent to redefine its tourism sector.

If successfully integrated with developments like Gorgora, the Lake Tana region could emerge as one of Africa’s most distinctive eco-tourism destinations. But achieving that vision will require not just infrastructure, but execution, connectivity, and global competitiveness.

For now, Felege Gion stands as a bold statement: Ethiopia is ready to compete on the tourism stage—and is willing to invest heavily to do so.
