ADDIS ABABA — In a major milestone for Ethiopia’s healthcare sector, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially inaugurated the highly anticipated Lafto Specialized Hospital today. Hailed as a pioneer in East Africa, the ultra-modern medical center is heavily supported by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the latest medical technologies.

Sprawling across 5.4 hectares of land, the massive healthcare complex features 17 modern buildings and has a capacity of 500 beds. Built to meet international standards, the facility will primarily focus on advanced oncology (cancer) and cardiology (heart) treatments. Officials note that the hospital will play a crucial role in curbing medical tourism, allowing citizens to receive world-class care at home while saving the country valuable foreign currency.

What sets Lafto Specialized Hospital apart regionally is its integration of state-of-the-art, AI-driven medical equipment. The facility boasts several firsts for both Ethiopia and the wider East African region:

  • PET-SCAN: The first of its kind in East Africa, featuring 2026-model digital technology equipped with artificial intelligence for precise pre- and post-cancer diagnostics.
  • MRI- 3 Tesla: Ethiopia’s first “Zero Helium Boil-off” MRI machine, significantly reducing maintenance needs and operational downtime.
  • 640-Slice CT Scan: Advanced imaging technology capable of conducting a full “One-Beat Cardiac” scan in a fraction of a second.
  • Cath Lab: A cutting-edge cardiovascular and neurovascular laboratory designed to diagnose and treat heart and brain blood vessel conditions via minimally invasive procedures.
  • 3D Mammography: Highly advanced equipment for early breast cancer detection, complete with multi-directional biopsy capabilities.
  • Robotic Laboratory (TLA): The nation’s first Total Laboratory Automation system, providing fast, high-quality results with zero human touch to eliminate errors.
  • Digital Imaging: Fully equipped with the latest generation of digital X-ray and ultrasound machines.
Beyond its medical diagnostic capabilities, the hospital was built with self-sustaining and patient-safety infrastructure in mind:
  • An on-site Medical Gas Plant capable of producing 80 cubic meters of oxygen per hour.
  • Anti-bacterial walls and floors designed to completely prevent hospital-acquired infections.
  • An independent water well and sewage treatment plant to ensure uninterrupted, sustainable service.
  • A modern, standardized morgue equipped with long-term cooling facilities that can accommodate up to 18 bodies.
In a closing statement recognizing the achievement, the city administration extended deep gratitude to the leadership, coordinators, and the local community who worked tirelessly to bring the vision to life.
“Congratulations to all residents of our city,” the official address read. “May the Creator bless Ethiopia and its people abundantly.”
