Tech startups in emerging markets often face familiar challenges: securing investment, attracting technical talent, and navigating changing regulations. For the founders of Emun Transport, however, building a digital mobility platform meant operating in an environment where even basic infrastructure had become unreliable.
Born in the aftermath of the conflict in Tigray, Ethiopia, Emun—which means “Trust” in Tigrinya—was created to restore confidence in urban transportation through technology, transparency, and safety. Rather than simply building another ride-hailing application, the founders set out to solve a much deeper problem: rebuilding trust between passengers and drivers.
Since officially launching its transportation service in October 2025, the Mekelle-based startup has grown to 541 registered drivers, more than 28,000 registered customers, and a team of 21 employees supporting operations, dispatch, customer service, technical support, and security. Today, approximately 273 active electric vehicle (EV) drivers continue serving customers despite ongoing fuel shortages affecting conventional vehicles.
The Genesis: Rebuilding Trust After Conflict
Following the conflict in Northern Ethiopia, transportation became more than simply getting from one place to another—it became a question of safety and trust.
Passengers often felt uncertain about entering vehicles driven by strangers, while drivers also faced concerns about their own safety. Families worried whenever loved ones traveled because there was no reliable way to verify who the driver was, where the trip was taking place, or whether passengers had reached their destinations safely.
“We realized the biggest transportation problem wasn’t the lack of taxis,” the founders explain. “The real problem was the lack of trust.”
This realization inspired the creation of Emun Transport.
The team developed a technology platform centered on transparency and accountability, featuring verified driver registration, digital trip records, GPS tracking, emergency SOS functionality, and a centralized dispatch system. Customers can request rides through the Emun mobile application, by calling the 8068 dispatch center, or directly through registered Emun drivers who initiate trips within the app.
Every completed trip creates a permanent digital record, providing greater accountability for both passengers and drivers while significantly improving safety.
Building Technology Under Extraordinary Conditions
Developing the software was only the beginning.
Operating a real-time ride-hailing platform in Tigray meant overcoming challenges rarely encountered by technology companies elsewhere.
Fuel shortages significantly reduced the number of conventional taxis available, forcing the transportation sector to depend increasingly on electric vehicles. At the same time, unstable electricity supplies meant drivers often waited several hours to recharge because fast-charging infrastructure remains largely unavailable in the region.
In addition, periodic GPS interference caused by network disruptions has occasionally affected real-time location services, creating operational challenges that most ride-hailing companies never have to consider.
Rather than abandoning the market, Emun adapted its platform to local realities by continuously improving dispatch operations, strengthening customer support processes, and refining its software to remain reliable even under difficult operating conditions.
These challenges have shaped Emun into a company focused on resilience rather than convenience alone.
Trust Became the Company’s Greatest Marketing Strategy
Many technology startups grow through aggressive advertising or viral social media campaigns.
Emun grew differently.
Because every trip is digitally recorded and linked to verified drivers, the company established a reputation for successfully recovering lost belongings.
Customers have recovered mobile phones, wallets, important documents, cash, and even valuable gold jewelry left inside vehicles.
In communities recovering from conflict, this level of accountability became one of Emun’s strongest competitive advantages.
Word spread quickly—not because of advertising campaigns, but because people experienced a transportation service they believed they could trust.
For Emun, trust became its most valuable product.
Looking Ahead: Building Northern Ethiopia’s Electric Mobility Ecosystem
Emun’s vision extends far beyond ride-hailing.
Over the next five years, the company aims to become Northern Ethiopia’s leading electric mobility platform through three strategic priorities.
Expanding Electric Vehicle Ownership
Emun plans to import 100 to 300 electric vehicles under a Driver Ownership Program.
Instead of selling vehicles outright, qualified drivers will make an initial down payment while the remaining balance is repaid over three to five years through income earned by operating on the Emun platform.
This model enables young drivers who cannot afford the full cost of a vehicle to gradually become owners while earning a sustainable income. It also strengthens driver loyalty, expands the fleet, and creates long-term employment opportunities.
Building Fast-Charging Infrastructure
One of the biggest barriers to electric mobility in Tigray is the lack of commercial DC fast-charging stations.
Emun plans to establish the region’s first commercial fast-charging network, reducing charging times from several hours to approximately 30–45 minutes.
The investment would increase driver productivity, reduce downtime, improve passenger service availability, and create an additional business line by serving both Emun drivers and privately owned electric vehicles.
Regional Expansion
Following continued growth in Mekelle, Emun plans to expand into Shire, Adigrat, Wukro, and Axum, before pursuing opportunities across other regions of Ethiopia.
Creating Employment Beyond Transportation
Emun’s impact extends far beyond connecting passengers with drivers.
The company’s long-term strategy is expected to generate employment opportunities across multiple sectors, including:
- Professional taxi drivers
- Dispatch operators
- Customer support representatives
- Technical support staff
- Security monitoring personnel
- Fleet supervisors
- EV mechanics
- Charging station operators
- Vehicle maintenance specialists
- Administrative staff
- Garage workers
- Sales and business development personnel
By combining ride-hailing technology with electric vehicle financing and charging infrastructure, Emun aims to build an integrated mobility ecosystem capable of supporting more than 1,000 sustainable jobs over the coming years.
A Vision Rooted in Local Reality
Unlike many startups that adapt solutions developed elsewhere, Emun was designed specifically for the realities of post-conflict Northern Ethiopia.
Its technology reflects the unique challenges faced by local communities, while its long-term vision aligns with Ethiopia’s transition toward cleaner transportation and sustainable urban mobility.
Rather than seeking equity investment, Emun is currently pursuing non-dilutive support, strategic partnerships, and catalytic funding to accelerate job creation, expand access to electric mobility, and strengthen transportation infrastructure across Tigray.
The founders believe that rebuilding trust through technology can also contribute to rebuilding communities.
As they put it:
“Start by solving a real problem not by chasing a trend. Technology can be copied, but trust is earned through consistent service, accountability, and a genuine commitment to the people you serve.”
