The Addis Ababa City Administration has taken a major step toward modernizing its urban landscape by inaugurating state-of-the-art underground parking plazas, alongside new taxi and bus terminals. The massive infrastructure rollout is designed to sustainably alleviate traffic congestion, reshape the city’s image, and create extensive job opportunities for the youth.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie emphasized that these projects reflect the administration’s commitment to sincerely serving the public and delivering on its promises.
“Our work is a witness that our words are not empty propaganda, as some claim,” Mayor Adanech stated, noting that the rapid completion of these projects across key areas—from Gotera to Bole, and Yeka to Kebena—is a clear indicator of the city’s fast-paced transformation.
Restoring Dignity to the Daily Commute
For years, city residents—particularly mothers and the elderly—endured severe hardships while waiting for transport, often caught in the pushing and shoving of crowded stops while battling harsh sun and heavy rain.
The new transit terminals are set to completely change this reality. According to the Mayor, commuters will now have the opportunity to rest comfortably and wait their turn in a dignified and respectful environment.
Driving the Green Transport Vision
The newly inaugurated spaces go far beyond traditional car parks. Built with the future in mind, the facilities are equipped with electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, playing a crucial role in realizing the city’s green transport vision.
The progress in the transport sector over the last seven years has been both fundamental and historic. Mayor Adanech highlighted a staggering leap in infrastructure: the city’s parking capacity, which previously sat at no more than 3,000 vehicles, has now expanded to accommodate over 180,000.
Social Hubs and Job Creation
These underground plazas are designed to be safe, vibrant community hubs. They are fully equipped with CCTV security cameras to ensure public safety and feature spacious plazas, shops, and cafes where residents can meet and strengthen their social interactions.
The economic impact is already being felt. The parking sector alone has created jobs for over 20,000 young people so far, and the addition of new commercial spaces within the plazas will unlock even more employment opportunities.
Noting that Addis Ababa deserves nothing but the best, Mayor Adanech assured residents that these infrastructure developments will continue to expand from the city center all the way to the outskirts, ensuring that modern transport and social spaces reach every neighborhood.
In her closing remarks, she called upon all residents to take ownership of these new facilities, urging the public to protect and care for the modern infrastructure as their own property.
