For years, Ethiopia has faced a quiet economic and medical drain. Annually, more than 10,000 Ethiopians travel abroad to countries like the UK and India seeking advanced medical treatment—a trend costing the nation up to US$700 million every year.
Now, a monumental project in the heart of Addis Ababa is set to reverse that tide.
Inaugurated by Mayor Adanech Abebe, the New Leaf Medical Complex represents a massive 3 billion Birr investment into the country’s healthcare infrastructure. Designed to significantly reduce the physical and financial burden of traveling overseas for medical care, this facility is a bold step toward making Ethiopia a regional hub for health tourism.
State-of-the-Art Scale and Scope
Housed in a modern, 13-storey medical plaza, New Leaf is built to handle high-capacity, specialized care. The facility boasts:
- 110+ inpatient beds tailored for specialized care and recovery.
- 8 fully equipped operating theatres designed for complex surgical procedures.
- Over 20 specialized and sub-specialized services, covering everything from advanced oncology (cancer care) and intensive care to complex cardiac treatments.
A Technological Marvel for East Africa
What truly sets the New Leaf Medical Complex apart is its heavy investment in cutting-edge diagnostic and life-support technology.
The complex is now the second facility in Ethiopia—and only the third in all of East Africa—to offer a specialized PET-CT Scan. Powered by state-of-the-art GE technology, it is the very first privately owned PET-CT scanner in the country.
In addition to the PET-CT scanner, the hospital is fully integrated with a modern Cath Lab, high-resolution MRI and CT scanners, and advanced Heart-Lung equipment. These additions ensure that world-class cardiac and cancer care can now be administered locally.
The Vision: Addis Ababa as a Health Tourism Hub
During the inauguration ceremony, Mayor Adanech Abebe emphasized that a project of this magnitude changes the landscape of the city.
“When we say we want to make Addis Ababa a center for medical tourism, we envision achieving this not only through government investment, but also by recognizing and supporting healthcare facilities developed by the private sector,” the Mayor stated.
She reaffirmed that the city administration will continue to strengthen its support for private institutions driving this sector forward. With facilities like the New Leaf Medical Complex opening their doors, the dream of transforming Addis Ababa into a premier destination for medical tourism is rapidly becoming a reality.
