Nebiy Mekonnen (1956 – 3 July 2024)

Nebiy Mekonnen, an influential Ethiopian poet, journalist, playwright, and translator, passed away on 3 July 2024. He was 68 years old.

Nebiy was born in 1956 and became a pivotal figure in Ethiopian literature and journalism. He co-founded and served as the editor-in-chief of the weekly newspaper Addis Admas, leaving an indelible mark on Ethiopian media.

One of Nebiy’s most remarkable achievements was his translation of “Gone with the Wind” into Amharic, titled “Negem Lela Ken New” (“Tomorrow is Another Day”). This monumental task was completed during his nearly eight-year imprisonment from 1977 to 1985 under the Derg Regime’s Red Terror. He wrote the translation on three thousand cigarette-paper pieces, a testament to his resilience and dedication. Upon its publication, it became one of the longest books ever published in Amharic.

Nebiy was also a member of the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Party and spent nearly a decade imprisoned during one of Ethiopia’s most tumultuous periods. His experiences shaped much of his work, infusing it with a profound depth and perspective.

His literary contributions include poetry collections, travel notes, and plays. Some of his poems have been translated into English and French, extending his influence beyond Ethiopia. His series, “Yegna Sew Beamerika” (“An Ethiopian in the U.S.”), published in Addis Admas, was widely read and eagerly anticipated each week.

Nebiy’s work and life were characterized by a relentless pursuit of truth and expression. His legacy will endure through his writings, which continue to inspire and resonate with readers.

Nebiy Mekonnen is survived by his wife, three daughters, and a son. His family plans to hold a burial ceremony upon the arrival of his wife and son from abroad.

Addis Insight and the broader literary community express their profound sadness at the loss of Nebiy Mekonnen. Condolences go out to his family, friends, and fans.
