The National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) has issued a statement emphasizing that drones cannot be launched or flown in Addis Ababa and its surrounding areas without prior permission.
According to the statement, NISS is responsible for safeguarding national leaders, critical infrastructure, and significant events as per Proclamation No. 1276/2014. The agency collaborates with relevant bodies to ensure national security.
To counter potential threats posed by drones and other technological devices, NISS has implemented both advanced technological measures and human resources. The agency highlighted that public awareness and strong coordination among stakeholders are essential for the effectiveness of these measures.
The statement further stressed the need for strict regulations in Addis Ababa and its surroundings, reiterating that no drone of any type can be operated without explicit permission from NISS.
For individuals or organizations seeking to use drones for work-related purposes, prior approval from NISS is mandatory. Applicants must submit a request in advance, specifying the purpose, location, type, and model number of the drone.
Additionally, NISS warned that any unauthorized drone flights will be intercepted. The agency has deployed anti-drone technology capable of detecting and identifying drones in real time, forcing them to land in designated areas. Drone operators involved in unauthorized flights will be arrested, the statement added.
