According to a report by The Green Legacy Initiative Steering committee, The Green Legacy Initiative is the most covered topic in Ethiopian media next to the Renaissance Dam.
Launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the initiative is a core focus area of the government, and the 2020 campaign aims to plant 5bn trees.
According to the committee that reviewed the Green Legacy Initiative campaign’s midterm status and future plans on Wednesday, July 29, 4.1 billion seedlings have been planted in just two months of the nationwide campaign while there are no confirmations over the reported numbers by independent parties.
The prime minister kicked off the 2020 campaign in Hawassa, along with regional and federal government officials, on June 5.
In the first season of the campaign held last year, Ethiopia, the government reported the plantation of 4 billion seedlings, and on July 29, 2020, it claimed that it had planted a world record of over 350,000,000 trees per day.
The United Nations report suggests that Ethiopia lost over 1,400 square kilometers of forest per year in the 2000s.
Additionally, the forestry sector in Ethiopia contributes very little to the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The government plans to increase its contribution and improve the nation’s culture of planting trees.
In addition, the initiative also plans to plant 5 billion trees in 2021 and 6 billion in 2022.
