The African Union (AU) has announced the inauguration of the new headquarters of the African Center for Disease Control (Africa CDC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The China-backed building, which was completed in a short time period, covers an area of 90,000 square meters and has a total construction area of nearly 40,000 square meters. It is expected to become one of the best-equipped centers for disease control in Africa, allowing the Africa CDC to coordinate disease prevention, surveillance, and control in the continent in partnership with national public health institutes and ministries of health of member states.

The building consists of an emergency medical department, a data center, a laboratory, training and meeting halls, and other facilities that will help the Africa CDC carry out its activities. It is a state-of-the-art facility that will greatly aid the organization in its efforts to combat diseases and improve public health outcomes in Africa.

The Chinese Foreign Minister, Qin Gang, is expected to visit Ethiopia this week and attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Africa CDC headquarters project in the African Village of Addis Ababa. The construction of the building was made possible through a number of agreements between the AU and the Chinese government. In July 2020, the AU Commission and the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China signed the Implementation Agreement on the Africa CDC headquarters building project.

The inauguration of the new Africa CDC headquarters is a significant milestone in the organization’s efforts to improve public health outcomes in Africa. It is a testament to the strong partnership between the AU and China, as well as the dedication of the construction professionals who worked on the project. The building will serve as a hub for disease control and prevention in the continent, and it is expected to greatly enhance the Africa CDC’s ability to carry out its important mission.

The Africa CDC is an important organization that plays a crucial role in the efforts to improve public health outcomes in Africa. It was established in 2017 to coordinate the response to public health emergencies and strengthen the capacity of member states to prevent and control diseases. The organization works closely with national public health institutes and ministries of health, as well as other stakeholders, to develop and implement evidence-based policies and strategies for disease prevention and control.

The Africa CDC has made significant progress in its short history, but there is still much work to be done to address the many health challenges facing the continent. The inauguration of the new headquarters will provide the organization with the facilities and resources it needs to continue its important work and make even greater strides in improving public health outcomes in Africa. Overall, the Africa CDC headquarters is a major accomplishment that will greatly benefit the people of Africa and serve as a model for other regions around the world facing similar health challenges
