Breaking News: Ethiopia’s Government Removes TPLF from Terrorist List

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – In a significant move, the Ethiopian House of People’s Representatives has voted to remove the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) from the country’s list of terrorist organizations. This decision comes after a two-year period of unrest in Ethiopia’s northern region, where the TPLF has been actively operating.

The House of People’s Representatives passed the decision, lifting the TPLF’s terrorism category, based on Article 20 Sub-Article 2 of Decree No. 1176/2012. This decree was issued for the prevention and control of terrorist crimes in the country. The Council of Ministers had previously submitted a proposal to designate the TPLF as a terrorist organization, which was approved by the House in an emergency meeting held on March 22, 2023.

During today session where this decision was made, members of the council raised various questions and concerns. However, the proposal to remove the TPLF from the terrorism list was ultimately approved by a majority vote, with 61 votes against and 5 abstentions.

This move signifies a potential shift in the Ethiopian government’s stance towards the TPLF and could have implications for future peace and stability in the region.
