Brigadier General Tefera Mamo missing after leaving his home on Monday morning, his wife Menen Hailethe BBC. According to his wife, the General left his home on Monday morning around 11:00 PM and had an appointment with a friend.

Later on the day his wife, Menen repeatedly called on his cell phone but she did not get an answer. Gen. Tefera has previously served in various capacities in the Amhara region, most recently as commander of the region’s special forces.

According to Menen, General Tefera’s acquaintances told him that they had been together until 4 p.m. and that they had since separated. However, his wife confirmed to the BBC that she did not know what had happened.

After leaving the Amhara Regional State Special Forces, General Tefera Mamo appeared in various media outlets to share his views. Menen went to the Federal Criminal Investigation Department and the Addis Ababa police to inquire about her husband’s disappearance, but she was told he was not in their custody.

She further added that she is still searching for a possible source of information to locate the whereabouts of her husband.

General Tefera Mamo is married and has four children.

General Tefera’s wife stated that her husband was taking prescribed medication and he would be ill if he did not take his medication.  She added that the general had come to Addis Ababa from Bahir Dar to seek medical attention for the bullets in his legs.

“He is accustomed to his detention and he has been there before. We are concerned about his health,” he said.

Neither the federal nor Addis Ababa police have yet commented on the general’s disappearance. Brigadier General Tefera Mamo, a senior officer in the Ethiopian Defense Forces for years, has been jailed for years with others for plotting a coup ten years ago.

Following the administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, he was released from prison and served in various capacities. Recently, TPLF forces invaded the Amhara and Afar regions, leading the region’s special forces, and were relieved of their duties a few months ago.
