Excerpt from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Speech at the 13th Ordinary Session of the 6th House of Peoples’ Representative

  • It is important to weigh the developments taking into account the challenges of the past 4 years;
  • Despite the challenges of drought, war, locusts and drought over the years, much development has been done;
  • About 4,700 km of asphalt road has been built in the last four years;
  • After the change, 116 km sidewalks and 151 km asphalt road were constructed in Addis Ababa;
  • In East Gojjam Zone alone, 504 km has been built in the last 2 and a half years.
  • Four years ago ethiotelecom used to have 38 million subscribers and now has 65.5 million subscribers;
  • Despite the war and instability, there used to be 4 sugar factories and now there are 9 sugar factories.
  • The reason for the shortage of sugar despite  the construction of the sugar factories is due to high demand.
  • The airline’s destination was 115 and now it has reached 127; The airline’s revenue was $ 3.3 billion before the change, and now it is $ 4.8 billion; The airline handles 22 million passengers;
  • 1.7 million students benefit from the recently launched feeding program;
  • 28% of the farmland is traversed by tractor and 45% of the cultivated land is cluster;
  • A total of 23-24 million quintals of summer wheat is expected;
  • Government subsidizes 15 billion birr
  • In Addis Ababa alone, for example, more than 628,000 students were fed, and more than 3.4 million loaves of bread were produced daily through two bakeries.
  • Efforts have also been made to control inflation by operating more than 80 Sunday markets.
  • Inflation has reached 33 percent.
