Four Killed, 20 Injured in Bomb Attack in Mekelle City

A bomb attack in Mekelle city, Ethiopia, on Friday, August 25, 2023, killed four people and injured 20 others. The attack took place at a nightclub in the city’s Romanat Square area at around 2:00 AM.

The Mekelle Police Office has confirmed that the attack was carried out by a former fighter. The suspect has not yet been arrested.

Five of the 20 victims who were injured in the attack are in serious condition. They are being treated at Ayder Referral Hospital in Mekelle.

Mekelle City Police Office Commander Woldai Medey said that a high level of security had been maintained in the city in connection with the Ashenda festival. However, the attack took place on the closing day of the festival.

Commander Woldai said that the identity of the person who committed the attack has been identified. He is a retired former fighter. The police are monitoring the suspect to bring him under control.

The police have confirmed that the attack was carried out using a hand grenade. The motive for the attack is believed to be personal conflict.

Deutsche Welle reports that Ayder Referral Hospital in Mekelle has received 20 people injured in the bomb attack since 2:00 AM. The five victims of the attack who are seriously injured are receiving appropriate medical attention.

The attack has shocked the people of Mekelle and Ethiopia. The government has condemned the attack and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Ashenda festival is a traditional festival celebrated by the people of Tigray, Ethiopia. The festival is a celebration of the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the harvest season.
