Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia is one of the most significant figures in African history. He was a visionary leader who brought Ethiopia into the modern era and led his people to victory against Italian colonialism in the Battle of Adwa on March 1, 1896. Despite his notable contributions, some critics have sought to diminish his legacy and credit in the Battle of Adwa. However, the reality is that Menelik’s leadership was crucial to the success of the Ethiopian forces in the battle, and his credit cannot be erased.

Sadly, despite Emperor Menelik’s significance and contributions to Ethiopian history, his legacy has faced challenges in recent times. The current government’s actions, such as raiding cultural shops that sell t-shirts commemorating Menelik, are a cause for concern. The censorship and suppression of Menelik’s memory undermine the rich cultural heritage of Ethiopia and the contributions of one of the country’s greatest leaders.

Additionally, the current government’s attempt to replace Emperor Menelik with the current Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in commemorating the Adwa victory is concerning. It is important to recognize the significant role that Menelik played in securing Ethiopia’s victory and securing its independence, and it is not appropriate to diminish his contributions in this way. The attempt to replace Menelik with Abiy Ahmed in commemorations of the Adwa victory is not only a disservice to Menelik’s memory but also diminishes the importance of the battle itself.

It is essential to recognize the significant contributions of Emperor Menelik in the Battle of Adwa and Ethiopian history. His legacy is an important part of Ethiopian culture and should not be erased or diminished. The current government’s attempts to censor and replace Menelik in commemorations of the Adwa victory are concerning and should be addressed to ensure that Menelik’s memory is preserved for future generations. The contributions of leaders like Menelik should be celebrated and remembered as an essential part of Ethiopia’s history and cultural heritage.

Firstly, Menelik’s diplomatic skills were instrumental in securing the support of other Ethiopian rulers and tribes. He recognized the threat posed by Italian colonialism and was able to rally a diverse coalition of Ethiopians to his cause. He established alliances with neighboring rulers such as King Tekle Haymanot of Gojjam, Ras Mikael of Wollo, and Ras Makonnen of Harar, which gave him access to a larger pool of fighters and resources. His diplomacy also helped to ensure that these leaders remained committed to the cause, even when faced with significant setbacks.

Secondly, Menelik’s military leadership was critical in the Battle of Adwa. He had a deep understanding of the terrain and deployed his troops in a way that took advantage of Ethiopia’s topography. He recognized the importance of using the high ground and deployed his troops on the hills overlooking the battlefield. This gave them a strategic advantage over the Italian forces, who were unable to mount a successful attack. Menelik also made use of guerrilla tactics and ambushes, which helped to weaken the Italian army and disrupt their supply lines.

Thirdly, Menelik’s leadership inspired his troops and gave them the confidence to fight against a much larger and better-equipped enemy. He was a charismatic leader who commanded the respect and loyalty of his soldiers. His speeches and personal presence on the battlefield were a source of motivation for his troops, who were fighting for their country’s independence and freedom. Menelik’s leadership helped to maintain morale and cohesion among the Ethiopian forces, even when they were facing significant losses.

Emperor Menelik’s role in the Battle of Adwa cannot be understated. His diplomatic skills, military leadership, and personal charisma were instrumental in securing Ethiopia’s victory against Italian colonialism. His credit cannot be erased, and any attempt to do so is a disservice to his legacy and the sacrifices of the Ethiopian people. Menelik’s leadership in the Battle of Adwa is a testament to the power of determination, courage, and strategic thinking, and his contributions to Ethiopia’s history should be celebrated and remembered for generations to come.
