Addis Ababa Administration Handed Over 51,229 Condominium Houses

In an event that was held today at Intercontinental Hotel, the Addis Ababa city administration handed over 51,229 houses through a lottery reward. From the total of 51,229 houses, 32,653 houses were 20/80 saving package while 18,576 houses were 40/60 houses. The 20/80 housing package included 1248 studio houses, 18,823 one bedroom, 7127 two bedroom houses and 5455 houses were 3 bedrooms.

The lottery included people who registered for a 20/80 three bedroom condominium in the year 2005 and 2013. During the lottery ceremony deputy mayor Takele Uma stated that the city administration is handing over an unspecified number of houses for farmers without going through a lottery system. According to the mayor the farmers were evicted from their land for the construction of the condominium.

In the past thirteen years, more than 385,000 houses were built as a result of a job opportunity for one million people was created. According to the mayor, the city was supposed to construct 471,000 houses on a yearly bases but the goal was not met due to budget and capacity limitation.
