The General Church Administrative Council of the Diocese of Addis Ababa has taken action against individuals who have committed apostasy against the church. On Monday, January 23, 2023, an emergency meeting was held under the chairmanship of Rev. Belay Mekonen, Deputy Chief of the General Church.

During the meeting, the Holy Synod strongly condemned the act of apostasy, which is considered a violation of the church’s canon and laws. The council also highlighted the serious and painful nature of the betrayal committed by individuals who have gone against the institutions that have given them power.

As a result of their actions, the council has ordered the suspension of the salaries of those who have committed apostasy. The council also emphasized that any form of negotiation with those who have committed apostasy is considered an indirect violation of church laws and regulations.

Furthermore, the Assembly has proposed resolutions that may be taken by the decision-making body of the Holy Synod against the canon of the Church and the law. In order to inform the public and the faithful, the council has decided to conduct extensive media work to demonstrate how the apostasy committed was against the canon of the church and the law.

The council urges the faithful to remain in prayer until a proper decision has been made. The act of apostasy is not only a crime against the church but also a violation of the constitution.
